For decades, Guernsey has been supplying workplaces and we continue to do so during the COVID-19 crisis. During these times, our drivers have responded thoughtfully and carefully to the changing environment to ensure customers get what they need. Our drivers have always shined, but they have never shined brighter than they do now.

Earlier this week, I got the chance to interview one of our drivers at our Dulles facility, Fred, to gain perspective on his experiences during these challenging times (while maintaining social distancing, of course). In September of this year, Fred will be celebrating his 34th year at Guernsey and has been through it all during his time here. However, there has been an inordinate amount of change to our operation during these recent months. I sat down with Fred to learn more about some of the differences.

The Interview

1. What are some of the changes due to COVID-19 when making deliveries?

“Many offices and buildings are like ghost towns, very eerie and quiet. But, things seem to be picking up now as businesses are re-opening and people are returning slowly.”

2. How are our customers reacting during these times?

“Most of the customers I deliver to are working from home now or alternate work days. The customers I do see when making deliveries are always considerate and offer me hand sanitizer.”

3. How have our drivers been adjusting to the changes?

“There was a time when we were half staffed and drivers had to learn one another routes. That is tough at times. When you’re not familiar with the ins and outs of certain deliveries and have to cover more territory when combining routes, things start to go all over the place.”

4. What are you doing to stay protected at work?

“I go a bit overboard with the cleaning and disinfecting, but better to be safe than sorry! I wouldn’t want to drive someone else’s truck unless it was disinfected. In the warehouse, we clean packing tables when they’re done being used and we always wear gloves and masks.”

5. Any other thoughts about everything that is going on?

“Although I think the COVID-19 response will go on for years, I hope I can continue to meet and interact with new people. That is the favorite part of my job.”

We remain optimistic after speaking with people like Fred, who have shown that they are going the extra mile to do their part in the current environment. We’d like to give a huge thank you to all of our Guernsey staff who are at the forefront of our efforts; our drivers who make deliveries each day to ensure the safe transfer of packages, warehouse crews that receive truckloads of products and ready them for a quick turnaround for distribution and our technical staff who make sure workplace equipment remains in working order for critical staff who require it. All your contributions are greatly appreciated. Thank you to our Guernsey Team!
